Friends and family will tell you that I am a Facebook.com junkie, one of the many who logs in and out at all hours of the day to update my profile, chat with friends, meet new people, and download ridiculous applications that are used to describe my personality. I am, in so many words, obsessed with the website that has become quite popular with America’s youth for connecting, reconnecting, and sharing with others. But, as much as I like to proclaim my knowledge of any and all Facebook traits, there was one application I knew nothing about…and it could be considered the most important.
With the help of sponsors and members alike, Facebook.com has offered an application that is equivalent to this website, known as Greenbook; just by simply adding the application to the user’s profile page, they are able to reduce CO2 by a fraction of the amount based on the number of current users. But, it can’t be that easy…right? Well, actually it is. Greenbook purchases amounts of CO2 reduction from the company 3Degrees by using the funds given to them by sponsors, such as Terrapass and The Experience Project; they then give a portion of the amount to everyone who downloads the application itself. The more users they get, the more they are able to purchase the next time around. But what is fascinating about this application is not the mission itself, but where it is located.
Unfortunately, it’s a common belief that young America doesn’t care. Politics? Religion? Economic Issues? We’d rather be shopping and playing video games, thank you very much. Or at least, that’s what some people think. In reality, young America cares just as much as everyone else. One cannot deny the great turnout for the current political race, and one cannot notice the fact that an application like this is featured in a website dominantly used by young Americans. And clearly, it has caught on with users reducing CO2 emissions by 483,771.57 lbs.—a pretty good number indeed. And it just keeps on growing with every download.
Clearly, America’s youth has gotten involved with today’s issues concerning the environment. With the help of informative movies, newspaper articles, and websites such as this and Facebook.com, many young people have become aware and have been inspired to take action…including this author, herself, who has recently added Greenbook to her profile page. No longer can we say that young America doesn’t care; rather, we can say that young America is just getting started. After all, we have to deal with the effects in the long run. So, if your young son or daughter feels the need to help out, direct them to Facebook.com. This way, they can help the environment with Facebook, just like you are helping out with this website. Do your part to help keep the awareness rising, and young America will do the same.

I believe you Cassandra, and I hope the next 20 years proves you right. The trick is that young America eventually grows up. Will they carry on the lessons of their youth, or discard them as naive.
