Subaru's reported carbon emissions
Subaru, a Japanese motor vehicle manufacturer, has established significant climate commitments and reported comprehensive emissions data for its global operations. For the fiscal year ending March 2025 (FYE March 2025), Subaru reported total carbon emissions of approximately 37.9 billion kg CO2e, encompassing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This figure is derived from Scope 1 emissions totalling about 157.5 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 market-based emissions of approximately 418.7 million kg CO2e, and substantial Scope 3 emissions amounting to about 37.5 billion kg CO2e. Subaru aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 60% compared to the fiscal year ending March 2017 (FYE March 2017). This reduction target applies to all scopes and has two established timeframes: a near-term goal for FYE March 2026 and a long-term commitment for FYE March 2036. Key contributors to Subaru's Scope 3 emissions in FYE March 2025 include the use of sold products, which accounted for approximately 29.8 billion kg CO2e, and purchased goods and services, contributing about 5.9 billion kg CO2e. Upstream transportation and distribution also represented a significant portion, totalling approximately 516.9 million kg CO2e. In FYE March 2024, Subaru's total emissions were approximately 39.9 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 emissions at about 154.5 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 market-based emissions at around 426.9 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions at approximately 39.5 billion kg CO2e. The use of sold products was again the largest contributor to Scope 3, at about 31.9 billion kg CO2e. For FYE March 2023, total emissions were approximately 34.5 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 162.1 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 market-based at roughly 392.3 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at approximately 34.0 billion kg CO2e. Prior to FYE March 2023, Subaru's reporting shows a downward trend in Scope 1 and 2 emissions. For instance, in FYE March 2022, Scope 1 and 2 emissions totalled about 582.3 million kg CO2e, with Scope 3 at approximately 28.8 billion kg CO2e. In FYE March 2021, Scope 1 and 2 emissions were approximately 690.0 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were around 34.1 billion kg CO2e. In FYE March 2020, total Scope 1 and 2 emissions were approximately 582.7 million kg CO2e, with Scope 3 emissions reaching about 36.2 billion kg CO2e. For FYE March 2019, Scope 1 and 2 emissions were approximately 588.9 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were about 35.5 billion kg CO2e. Subaru's commitment to environmental sustainability is further demonstrated through its reporting of these detailed emissions data, aligning with industry-standard climate terminology and providing transparency on its carbon footprint.
