3M, a US-based company in the All Other Miscellaneous Manufacturing industry, reported its latest total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions as approximately 32 billion kg CO2e in 2024. This includes about 1.5 billion kg CO2e from Scope 1 (direct emissions), 558 million kg CO2e from market-based Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and 29.9 billion kg CO2e from Scope 3 (value chain emissions).

Looking back, 3M's total emissions in 2023 were approximately 35.2 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 2.28 billion kg CO2e, market-based Scope 2 at 631 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at 32.3 billion kg CO2e. In 2022, total emissions stood at approximately 40.7 billion kg CO2e, comprising around 2.38 billion kg CO2e for Scope 1, 757 million kg CO2e for market-based Scope 2, and 37.6 billion kg CO2e for Scope 3.

3M has set ambitious climate commitments. The company is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 52.6% by 2030, from a 2019 base year. Additionally, 3M aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030, from a 2021 base year. These near-term targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with keeping warming to 1.5°C. For long-term goals, 3M is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050.
