Azul's reported carbon emissions
Azul's climate commitments include achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 across all scopes. This ambitious goal is supported by a near-term target to reduce well-to-wake Scope 1 and 3 jet fuel greenhouse gas emissions by 46% per revenue tonne kilometre (RTK) by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year. Furthermore, Azul has committed to significant reductions in absolute emissions by 2045, aiming for a 90% decrease in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 90% reduction in Scope 3 emissions related to fuel and energy and upstream transportation and distribution, all from a 2019 baseline. In terms of emissions, Azul reported Scope 1 emissions of approximately 3.3 billion kg CO2e and Scope 3 emissions of approximately 1.12 billion kg CO2e for 2023. For the preceding year, 2022, Scope 1 emissions were approximately 3.09 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 3 emissions at approximately 871 million kg CO2e. In 2020, Azul's emissions included Scope 1 at approximately 1.65 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 at approximately 319,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at approximately 3.44 million kg CO2e. In 2019, the airline reported Scope 1 emissions of approximately 2.96 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions of approximately 379,000 kg CO2e. Azul's climate targets are aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are recognised as being consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C. The airline's commitment extends to a net-zero target by 2050, as also stated in other reports.
