The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), headquartered in GB and operating within the printed matter and recorded media sector, has demonstrated a commitment to reducing its environmental impact. For the financial year 2024, the BBC reported total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions of approximately 374,063,000 kg CO2e. This included Scope 1 emissions of about 14,897,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions (market-based) of approximately 6,494,000 kg CO2e. Scope 3 emissions were significantly higher, totalling around 352,672,000 kg CO2e, with purchased goods and services being the largest contributor at approximately 171,728,000 kg CO2e. In the preceding year, 2023, total emissions were approximately 379,718,000 kg CO2e, with Scope 1 emissions at about 16,721,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 (market-based) at approximately 6,532,000 kg CO2e. Scope 3 emissions for 2023 totalled about 356,465,000 kg CO2e. Looking at earlier data, Scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2022 were approximately 19,218,000 kg CO2e for Scope 1 and an unquantified amount for Scope 2, with Scope 2 electricity usage at 5,306,000 kg CO2e. In 2020, the BBC reported total emissions of about 350,893,000 kg CO2e, comprising Scope 1 emissions of approximately 20,010,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 (market-based) of about 7,014,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of approximately 323,869,000 kg CO2e. The BBC has established robust climate commitments. It aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46% and Scope 3 emissions by 28% by the financial year 2030/31, using a baseline from FY 2019/20. These targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Furthermore, the BBC is working towards becoming a 'True Net Zero' organisation by 2050, with a commitment to reduce all emissions by at least 90% by that year. The organisation has also set near-term targets, such as reducing Scope 1 emissions by 24% by 2022 from a 2015 baseline, and Scope 2 emissions by 30% by 2025 from a 2020 baseline.
