The BBC, a UK-based organisation in the Printed matter and recorded media industry, reported its most recent Scope 1 emissions as 16,624,000 kg CO2e in 2025. Market-based Scope 2 emissions for the same year were 7,627,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions totalled 320,767,000 kg CO2e.

Looking at previous years, in 2024, Scope 1 emissions were 18,132,000 kg CO2e, market-based Scope 2 emissions were 8,890,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were 339,667,000 kg CO2e. In 2023, Scope 1 emissions were 16,721,000 kg CO2e, market-based Scope 2 emissions were 6,532,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were 356,465,000 kg CO2e.

The BBC has set ambitious climate commitments, with near-term Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved targets. They are committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by the financial year 2030/31, from a 2019/20 base year. Concurrently, they aim to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 28% over the same timeframe. These targets are classified as consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.

The BBC is also committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. As part of this, long-term Net Zero emission reduction targets are being set during FY2023/24, aligning with the SBTi standard to decarbonise their GHG emissions by 2050. They aim to reduce all emissions by at least 90% by 2050.

Historically, the BBC had a target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 24% by 2022 from a 2015 baseline. Additionally, there were aims to reduce Scope 1 emissions by 40% and Scope 2 emissions by 30% by 2025 from a 2020 baseline. The company reports that emissions from value chain activities (Scope 3) have reduced by 12% against a 2019/20 base year, working towards their 28% reduction target by 2030/31.
