In 2024, MTN, a South African post and telecommunication services company, reported total global carbon emissions of approximately 1.74 billion kg CO2e. This included Scope 1 emissions of about 184.07 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 267.19 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of around 1.29 billion kg CO2e.

Looking back, MTN's total global emissions were higher in previous years, with approximately 3.71 billion kg CO2e in 2023, 4.86 billion kg CO2e in 2022, and 5.02 billion kg CO2e in 2021.

MTN has set several climate commitments and reduction targets:

• Net-Zero Target: MTN aims to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2040, encompassing all scopes.
• Near-Term Absolute Reductions (2030):
  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, from a 2021 base year.
  • Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities by 50% by 2030, from a 2021 base year.
  • The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) confirms MTN Group Limited's commitment to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 from a 2021 base year, consistent with a 1.5°C pathway. Additionally, MTN commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities by 50% by 2030 from a 2021 base year, and that 80% of its suppliers by spend covering purchased goods and services and capital goods will have science-based targets by 2026.
  • More recently, MTN Group Limited has also committed to reduce absolute Scope 1 GHG emissions by 42.0% by 2030 from a 2024 base year, absolute Scope 2 GHG emissions by 42.0% by 2030 from a 2024 base year, and absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25.0% within the same timeframe.
• Past Achievement: In 2022, MTN achieved a 13.9% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions (excluding MTN SA) against a 2022 reduction target of 3.5%.
