ArcelorMittal, headquartered in Luxembourg and a leading player in the basic iron and steel industry, has set ambitious climate targets. The company aims for a 25% reduction in global carbon emissions intensity on a Scope 1 and 2 basis by 2030, building on its net-zero by 2050 ambition announced in September 2020. Furthermore, ArcelorMittal has increased its European Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity reduction target to 35% by 2030, up from the previous 30%. The company also aspires to be carbon-neutral in Europe by 2050.
In terms of emissions, ArcelorMittal reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions totalling approximately 98.3 billion kg CO2e for 2025 and approximately 101.4 billion kg CO2e for 2024. For 2023, Scope 1 emissions were approximately 108.2 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 2 emissions (market-based) at approximately 6.6 billion kg CO2e and Scope 3 emissions at approximately 6.3 billion kg CO2e. This resulted in a combined Scope 1 and 2 total of approximately 98.5 billion kg CO2e for 2023. In 2022, Scope 1 emissions were approximately 113.4 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions (market-based) were approximately 5.9 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 3 at approximately 6.4 billion kg CO2e, leading to a Scope 1 and 2 total of approximately 106.2 billion kg CO2e. Prior to this, in 2021, total emissions were approximately 147.3 billion kg CO2e, comprising Scope 1 at approximately 131.7 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 (market-based) at approximately 7.5 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at approximately 8.1 billion kg CO2e. The company notes a missing data point for Scope 3, specifically for purchased goods and services, across several reporting years.
