The British Council's carbon emissions for 2024 were approximately 23,386,000 kg CO2e. This total comprises Scope 1 emissions of around 752,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 9,897,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of about 12,737,000 kg CO2e.

Looking at previous years, their total emissions were approximately 26,791,000 kg CO2e in 2023, 20,043,000 kg CO2e in 2022, and 19,258,000 kg CO2e in 2021. For 2020, total emissions were around 22,528,000 kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at 3,359,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 at 5,741,000 kg CO2e. In 2019, total emissions were also around 22,528,000 kg CO2e, including Scope 1 emissions of approximately 4,555,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions of about 7,568,000 kg CO2e.

The British Council has set a near-term absolute reduction target to reduce emissions from domestic business flights by at least 30% from a 2017-18 baseline, with a target end year of 2025. They also report an overall 15% reduction in their total carbon footprint from 26,565 tonnes CO2e in 2018-19 to 22,528 tonnes CO2e in 2019-20. Additionally, their carbon footprint per full-time equivalent (FTE) showed a 49% reduction from 4.32 tonnes CO2e in 2018-19 to 2.21 tonnes CO2e in 2019-20.
