Certara's reported carbon emissions

Certara, a US-based company in the research and development services sector, has reported significant progress in its climate commitments. For the reporting year 2024, Certara's total greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 7.07 million kg CO2e. This figure comprises Scope 1 emissions of about 160,670 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 796,480 kg CO2e (primarily from purchased electricity), and Scope 3 emissions totalling around 6.15 million kg CO2e. In 2023, Certara reported total emissions of approximately 9.01 million kg CO2e, with Scope 1 emissions at about 363,340 kg CO2e, Scope 2 at approximately 816,410 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at around 7.77 million kg CO2e. Prior to this, for the reporting year 2022, Certara disclosed Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 1 emissions were around 436,000 kg CO2e (including fugitive emissions and stationary combustion), and Scope 2 emissions (location-based) were approximately 1.11 million kg CO2e from purchased electricity. Scope 3 data was not disclosed for this year. Certara is actively working towards reducing its environmental impact with ambitious targets. Through Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Certara has committed to a near-term reduction of absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 63.0% by 2035, using 2024 as the base year. Additionally, the company aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream leased assets, and downstream leased assets by 37.5% within the same timeframe. Certara also pledges that by 2030, 89.66% of its suppliers, covering purchased goods and services, capital goods, and upstream transportation and distribution, will have science-based targets. Beyond the SBTi commitments, Certara previously stated an aim to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to near zero by the middle of the decade.
