The company's emissions performance has varied over recent years, with reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2023 at approximately 46 billion kg CO2e, for 2022 at approximately 48 billion kg CO2e, and for 2021 at approximately 62 billion kg CO2e. Prior to this, in 2020, emissions were around 56 billion kg CO2e, and in 2019, approximately 59 billion kg CO2e. Looking further back, Petrobras reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions of around 62 billion kg CO2e in 2018, 67 billion kg CO2e in 2017 and 2016, and 78 billion kg CO2e in 2015. For 2013, Scope 1 emissions were approximately 71.6 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions were approximately 1.8 billion kg CO2e, totalling around 73.4 billion kg CO2e. In 2012, Scope 1 emissions stood at approximately 66 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 at approximately 1.4 billion kg CO2e, summing to about 67.4 billion kg CO2e. Scope 1 emissions in 2011 were approximately 54.9 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 2 emissions around 1.3 billion kg CO2e, for a total of about 56.2 billion kg CO2e. In 2010, Scope 1 and 2 emissions were approximately 61.1 billion kg CO2e, and in 2009, approximately 57.8 billion kg CO2e. For 2008, Scope 1 and 2 emissions were reported at about 57.6 billion kg CO2e, and in 2007, approximately 49.88 billion kg CO2e. Petrobras has established several climate commitments, including a reduction of total operational absolute emissions by 30% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels. This target applies to Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The company also aims for a net-zero ambition for activities under its control (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2050. Further commitments include a 25% reduction in total operational absolute emissions by 2030, zero routine flare burning by 2030, and rejecting approximately 40 million tonnes of CO2 by 2025 through carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) projects. In terms of intensity targets, Petrobras aims for a 32% reduction in carbon intensity in the E&P segment by 2025, maintaining this at 15 kgCO2e/boe until 2030. They also target a 40% reduction in methane emission intensity in the E&P segment by 2025, with a reported consolidation of a 55% reduction in methane emission intensity in the upstream segment by 2025, reaching 0.29 t CH4/thousand tHC.
