The context
A global insurer with net zero ambitions and growing supply chain complexity
Howden is a global insurance group operating across 55+ countries. It has experienced substantial growth in its business and in 2024 Howden set a target to achieve net zero by 2050. The business has taken steps to strengthen its systems, data and partnerships to enable it to achieve its climate objectives. Working with DitchCarbon has become an important part of how it collects and measures reliable scope 3, purchased goods and services PG&S emissions data.
“We’ve been operating across 55 countries for years, but our Scope 3 data told a completely different story each time someone asked for it. We needed one version of the truth and we needed it to hold up under scrutiny.” Tim Rainbow Environmental Sustainability Manager, Howden
The challenge
Fragmented PG&S data, no single source of truth
As Howden continues to grow and expand, so too does the complexity of its value chain emissions. In providing high-quality insights to decision makers and to support credible and transparent climate disclosure, Howden set out to establish a structured process for collecting its PG&S data.
Howden are working with DitchCarbon to support this by:
- Providing a scalable solution and methodology with integration into its carbon accounting platform Salesforce Net Zero Cloud
- Generate entity level emissions
- A global consolidated scope 3 PG&S footprint
- Meeting its regulatory reporting requirements
Using the tool enables Howden to translate Group wide spend data into acoherent emissions profile, one that supports internal planning against its climate goals, and subsequent engagement with its suppliers.
The solution
Turning complexity into structure
Howden needed a reliable way to process Purchased Goods and Services (PG&S) data from across 55 countries without relying on manual spreadsheets. DitchCarbon provided a central hub to standardise this global spend data, matching suppliers against a database of over 2 million organisations to generate accurate entity level emissions profiles.
By integrating directly with Salesforce Net Zero Cloud, DitchCarbon replaced fragmented files with an automated calculation process. The platform translates complex group wide procurement records into a clear, audit-ready Scope 3 footprint. This gives Howden the structured evidence required to meet regulatory reporting requirements and the foundation needed to engage suppliers on credible reduction plans
The outcome
Consistent, agile, and scalable reporting
Through its partnership with DitchCarbon, Howden has strengthened its ability to capture and measure Scope 3 PG&S emissions. The reporting process increases transparency and provides a strong foundation as Howden gains greater visibility across its scope 3 PG&S emissions, as the company continues to grow
A structured dataset
Howden now has a single, structured view of its PG&S emissions, with custom filters allowing stakeholders to cut and analyse the data however they need.
Improved efficiency
The Salesforce integration process is cleaner and faster, requiring less cleansing of data. Sustainability and procurement teams can now focus on insights, not data cleansing.
A scalable framework
As Howden continues to grow and strengthen its systems and processes, how Howden reports and measures emissions can be adapted, supporting improved spend visibility and more
