Air Liquide, headquartered in France and operating in Industrial Gas Manufacturing, has set ambitious climate targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 across its entire value chain.

In 2025, Air Liquide's total reported carbon emissions are projected to be approximately 58.44 billion kg CO2e. This includes Scope 1 emissions of about 1.46 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 19.60 billion kg CO2e (market-based), and Scope 3 emissions totalling around 24.25 billion kg CO2e. Key Scope 3 categories for 2025 include fuel and energy-related activities at approximately 6.60 billion kg CO2e, purchased goods and services at about 6.60 billion kg CO2e, and use of sold products at around 6.99 billion kg CO2e.

Looking back, Air Liquide's total emissions for 2024 were approximately 58.18 billion kg CO2e, comprising 14.87 billion kg CO2e from Scope 1, 20.06 billion kg CO2e from Scope 2 (market-based), and 23.24 billion kg CO2e from Scope 3. In 2023, the company reported Scope 1 emissions of roughly 15.47 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions of about 21.50 billion kg CO2e. For 2022, Scope 1 emissions were approximately 16.08 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions were around 22.77 billion kg CO2e. In 2021, Scope 1 emissions were about 15.56 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions were around 23.96 billion kg CO2e. The total emissions for 2020 were approximately 58.74 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at 15.35 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 at 17.18 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at 19.45 billion kg CO2e.

Air Liquide has set several climate commitments:

• Carbon Neutrality: The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2050, with intermediate milestones in 2025 and 2035.
• Absolute Emissions Reduction (Scope 1 & 2): Air Liquide is committed to a 33% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 2035, against a 2020 baseline. They also commit to start reducing their absolute CO2 emissions around 2025.
• Intensity Reduction: The company targets a 30% reduction in carbon intensity (kg CO2-eq./€ Ebitda) by 2025, compared to a 2015 baseline, for both Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. This target remains in place despite an increase in carbon intensity in 2021 due to the acquisition of Sasol Air Separation Units.
• Scope 3 Emissions Reduction: Air Liquide commits to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of fossil fuel products sold by 60% by 2035, from a 2021 baseline. They also aim for a 43% reduction in overall Scope 3 emissions by 2030, from a 2021 baseline.

Air Liquide's Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments, consistent with reductions required to keep warming to well-below 2°C, include a 35% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2035 from a 2021 base year, and a 60% absolute reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of fossil fuel products sold within the same timeframe.
