Boliden, a Swedish company in the Chemical and fertilizer minerals, salt and other mining and quarrying products n.e.c. industry, has reported its carbon emissions and climate commitments.

In 2024, Boliden's total emissions were approximately 5.37 billion kg CO2e. This included Scope 1 emissions of around 657.65 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 market-based emissions of approximately 1.38 billion kg CO2e (or 207.15 million kg CO2e location-based), and Scope 3 emissions totalling about 3.33 billion kg CO2e. Key categories within Scope 3 were purchased goods and services (approximately 2.25 billion kg CO2e), capital goods (about 425.51 million kg CO2e), and upstream transportation and distribution (around 250.76 million kg CO2e).

Looking back, Boliden's total emissions were approximately 4.88 billion kg CO2e in 2023, and about 4.34 billion kg CO2e in 2021. Their Scope 1 emissions were approximately 627.85 million kg CO2e in 2023 and 624.79 million kg CO2e in 2021. Scope 2 market-based emissions were around 841.06 million kg CO2e in 2023 and 881.48 million kg CO2e in 2021. Scope 3 emissions were approximately 3.41 billion kg CO2e in 2023 and 2.84 billion kg CO2e in 2021.

Boliden has set ambitious climate commitments. The company is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, using a 2021 base year. Additionally, Boliden aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% within the same timeframe. These near-term targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are classified as consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.

For the long term, Boliden has committed to achieving net-zero absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company previously had an intensity-based target set in 2019 to reduce CO2 intensity by 40% by 2030 compared to 2012 levels for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
