Boliden, a Swedish company in the chemical and fertilizer minerals, salt, and other mining and quarrying products n.e.c. industry, has disclosed its carbon emissions and set ambitious climate commitments.

For 2025, Boliden anticipates total emissions of approximately 6.53 billion kg CO2e. This includes an estimated 659 million kg CO2e from Scope 1 emissions, 245 million kg CO2e from Scope 2 emissions, and about 11.98 billion kg CO2e from Scope 3 emissions. In 2024, the company reported total emissions of approximately 5.96 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 emissions at around 685.8 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions (market-based) at approximately 1.43 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions totalling about 3.84 billion kg CO2e. For 2023, Boliden's Scope 1 emissions were approximately 628 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were about 215 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were around 4.02 billion kg CO2e. Looking back to 2022, their Scope 1 emissions were roughly 629 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were about 286 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were approximately 3.81 billion kg CO2e.

Boliden is committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, using 2021 as a base year. This target has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with a 1.5°C warming scenario. Additionally, Boliden aims to reduce its absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% within the same timeframe, also from a 2021 base year. The company also has a long-term goal to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in line with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and as a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). Historically, Boliden had set a target in 2019 to reduce its CO2 intensity by 40% by 2030, compared with a 2012 baseline.
