Cory's reported carbon emissions
Cory, a UK-based company in the plastic waste treatment and landfill industry, has set ambitious climate commitments. The company aims for its EfW (Energy from Waste) operations to become 'carbon negative' by 2031, following the operationalisation of a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) plant. This involves removing more CO2 from the atmosphere than is emitted, due to the composition of waste containing both biogenic and fossil carbon.
Cory is also working towards net-zero operational emissions by 2040. Key initiatives include maximising energy efficiency, phasing out diesel heavy plant by 2040 with no new diesel plant from 2030, halving zero-emission dock tractors at its Belvedere site by 2030, and phasing out natural gas from all sites by 2030. Furthermore, Cory uses low-carbon fuels in its river fleet and is researching zero-emission marine vessels. Since 2024, Cory has purchased renewable energy for all its sites, excluding its Barking Waste Transfer Station, which will be covered by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) from mid-2025.
