Ghent University

Ghent University, based in Belgium, reported total emissions of approximately 39,987 tonnes CO2e in 2023. This included Scope 1 emissions of around 12,565 tonnes CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of about 8,810 tonnes CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions totalling approximately 18,612 tonnes CO2e. Key contributors to Scope 3 emissions were business travel (approximately 10,348 tonnes CO2e), employee commutes (around 4,148 tonnes CO2e), and fuel and energy related activities (approximately 3,257 tonnes CO2e).

In 2022, Ghent University's reported emissions were approximately 40,946 tonnes CO2e, covering Scope 1 (around 14,653 tonnes CO2e from stationary combustion) and Scope 2 (approximately 1,392 tonnes CO2e from purchased heat and 9,033 tonnes CO2e from purchased electricity). For 2021, total emissions were roughly 46,076 tonnes CO2e, with Scope 1 from stationary combustion at about 19,111 tonnes CO2e, and Scope 2 from purchased heat and electricity at approximately 3,233 tonnes CO2e and 10,997 tonnes CO2e respectively.

The university has also reported emissions for earlier years: approximately 41,161 tonnes CO2e in 2020, 55,803 tonnes CO2e in 2019, 46,975 tonnes CO2e in 2018, 35,764 tonnes CO2e in 2017, and 34,929 tonnes CO2e in 2016. In 1988, Ghent University reported Scope 1 stationary combustion emissions of roughly 25,363 tonnes CO2e and Scope 2 emissions from purchased heat and electricity of approximately 872 tonnes CO2e and 8,541 tonnes CO2e respectively.

Ghent University has published a carbon footprint for 2024, which includes a production emission factor of 4,530 tCO2e per FTE. The university has not disclosed specific, publicly available emissions reduction targets or commitments from initiatives like SBTi or The Climate Pledge.
