Ground Control

Ground Control, a UK-based company in the food waste treatment industry (composting and land application), reported total carbon emissions of about 3,548 tonnes CO2e in 2023. This included approximately 3,303 tonnes CO2e from Scope 1 emissions, and 73 tonnes CO2e from market-based Scope 2 emissions (or 193 tonnes CO2e location-based Scope 2 emissions). Scope 3 emissions in 2023 were about 172 tonnes CO2e, with a notable missing data point for purchased goods and services.

In 2022, Ground Control's emissions totalled approximately 18,000 tonnes CO2e, comprising around 3,303 tonnes CO2e for Scope 1, 73 tonnes CO2e for Scope 2, and 14,603 tonnes CO2e for Scope 3. Key Scope 3 categories included waste generated in operations (about 5,691 tonnes CO2e) and purchased goods and services (approximately 4,943 tonnes CO2e).

Looking back to 2021, the company's total emissions were about 12,072 tonnes CO2e, with Scope 1 at roughly 3,185 tonnes CO2e, market-based Scope 2 at about 29 tonnes CO2e, and Scope 3 at around 8,858 tonnes CO2e. Significant Scope 3 contributors included waste generated in operations (about 7,407 tonnes CO2e) and upstream transportation and distribution (approximately 1,062 tonnes CO2e).

Ground Control has set ambitious climate commitments, with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated goals. The company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by FY2038. Near-term targets include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by FY2030, from a FY2021 base year. Additionally, Ground Control commits to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% within the same timeframe. Long-term, the company pledges to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by FY2038 from a FY2021 base year. These targets include biogenic land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks. Ground Control has been a BA1.5 member since September 2021, and its near-term and long-term targets are classified as consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.
