Konecranes, headquartered in FI and operating in the machinery and equipment n.e.c. (29) industry, has reported its carbon emissions and set significant climate commitments.

For the reporting year 2025, Konecranes reported a total of approximately 3.06 billion kg CO2e. This includes Scope 1 emissions of about 38.4 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 2.5 million kg CO2e (market-based), and substantial Scope 3 emissions totalling about 3.02 billion kg CO2e. The largest contributors to Scope 3 emissions for this period were the use of sold products (approximately 2.03 billion kg CO2e) and purchased goods and services (approximately 817.8 million kg CO2e).

In the previous year, 2024, the company's total emissions were approximately 3.08 billion kg CO2e. Scope 1 emissions stood at around 38.2 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 at approximately 2.9 million kg CO2e (market-based), and Scope 3 emissions at about 3.04 billion kg CO2e. Again, the use of sold products was the primary driver of Scope 3 emissions, accounting for approximately 2.04 billion kg CO2e, followed by purchased goods and services at roughly 828.8 million kg CO2e.

Konecranes has established ambitious climate targets, aiming to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 60% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Furthermore, the company is committed to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions, specifically from purchased goods and services and the use of sold products, by 50% within the same timeframe. These targets align with a 1.5°C warming scenario.

The company also aims for carbon-neutral own operations by 2030. In 2024, Konecranes reported significant progress, with emissions from its own operations decreasing by 56% compared to 2019. As the science-based target for Scope 1 and 2 was achieved in 2022, the focus has shifted towards this longer-term carbon neutrality goal.

The use of sold products was the largest contributor to Scope 3, at around 3.52 billion kg CO2e, with purchased goods and services following at approximately 1.43 billion kg CO2e.

In 2022, total emissions were approximately 4.69 billion kg CO2e, encompassing Scope 1 at roughly 40.1 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 at about 2.9 million kg CO2e (market-based), and Scope 3 at approximately 4.65 billion kg CO2e. Use of sold products contributed approximately 3.01 billion kg CO2e to Scope 3, and purchased goods and services accounted for about 1.45 billion kg CO2e.

Earlier reporting years also indicate significant emission levels, with total emissions ranging from approximately 53.7 million kg CO2e in 2016 to 62.7 million kg CO2e in 2014. Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported consistently, with Scope 3 data becoming more detailed over time. For instance, in 2018, Scope 1 emissions were approximately 54 million kg CO2e, and Scope 2 market-based emissions were about 35 million kg CO2e. In 2017, Scope 1 emissions were around 57.7 million kg CO2e, and Scope 2 market-based emissions were approximately 42.5 million kg CO2e. Emissions data from 2010 and 2009 show higher Scope 1 emissions of approximately 85 million kg CO2e and 102.6 million kg CO2e respectively, with limited Scope 2 reporting for those years.

Konecranes' climate commitments are guided by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation, underscoring their dedication to science-aligned emissions reductions. The company also previously pursued an intensity-based target to reduce emissions intensity per sale by 50% by 2025, with a 2017 base year, for its own factories and service operations.
