Kumagai Gumi, a Japanese construction company, has reported its carbon emissions for several years, detailing its commitment to climate action.

For the reporting year 2024, Kumagai Gumi's total emissions were approximately 3.05 billion kg CO2e. This figure is comprised of Scope 1 emissions totalling about 52.7 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 12.8 million kg CO2e, and substantial Scope 3 emissions amounting to about 2.9 billion kg CO2e. The largest contributors within Scope 3 were the use of sold products (approximately 2.08 billion kg CO2e) and purchased goods and services (about 753.7 million kg CO2e).

In the preceding year, 2023, total emissions stood at approximately 2.42 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 52.2 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 at approximately 11.9 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at about 2.36 billion kg CO2e.

Kumagai Gumi has set ambitious climate targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company commits to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% by FY2030 and by 75% by FY2050, using FY2020 as the base year. Furthermore, Kumagai Gumi aims to reduce its absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 13% by FY2030 and by 37% by FY2050, also from a FY2020 baseline. The company's near-term targets for Scope 3 emissions are considered on track.
