Sumitomo Bakelite

Sumitomo Bakelite, a Chemical and fertilizer minerals, salt and other mining and quarrying products n.e.c. company headquartered in Japan, reported total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions of approximately 1.1 billion kg CO2e in 2024. This figure includes about 79.5 million kg CO2e from Scope 1 and approximately 75.2 million kg CO2e from Scope 2. Scope 3 emissions were approximately 947 million kg CO2e, with significant contributions from purchased goods and services (approximately 718 million kg CO2e), capital goods (approximately 65 million kg CO2e), and upstream transportation and distribution (approximately 61 million kg CO2e).

Looking at previous years, in 2023, the company's Scope 1 emissions were about 45.2 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were approximately 116.9 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were approximately 4.5 billion kg CO2e. For 2022, Scope 1 emissions were around 43.5 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were approximately 123.6 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions totalled about 4.8 billion kg CO2e.

Sumitomo Bakelite has set ambitious climate commitments. The company is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 48% by fiscal year 2030, using a fiscal year 2021 base year. Additionally, it aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, and end-of-life treatment of sold products by 25% within the same timeframe. These near-term targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C. For the long term, Sumitomo Bakelite strives to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 2050, and also aims for net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050.
