Sumitomo Bakelite

Sumitomo Bakelite, headquartered in Japan and operating in the Chemical and fertilizer minerals, salt and other mining and quarrying products n.e.c. industry, reported its Scope 1 emissions for 2024 as 79,554,000 kg CO2e. Scope 2 emissions for the same year were 75,195,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions totalled 947,000,000 kg CO2e. Key categories within Scope 3 included purchased goods and services (718,000,000 kg CO2e), capital goods (65,000,000 kg CO2e), and upstream transportation and distribution (61,000,000 kg CO2e).

Sumitomo Bakelite has set ambitious climate commitments. The company aims to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050. For its near-term targets, the company is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 48% by FY2030 from a FY2021 base year. Additionally, it aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, and end-of-life treatment of sold products by 25% within the same timeframe. These targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.
