Sumitomo Bakelite, a chemical and fertiliser minerals company headquartered in Japan, reported its latest emissions data for 2024. Its Scope 1 emissions were 79,554,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were 75,195,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were 947,000,000 kg CO2e. Key categories for Scope 3 in 2024 included purchased goods and services at 718,000,000 kg CO2e, upstream transportation and distribution at 61,000,000 kg CO2e, and capital goods at 65,000,000 kg CO2e.

Looking back, in 2023, the company's Scope 1 emissions were 45,228,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were 116,878,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were 4,511,333,000 kg CO2e. For 2022, Sumitomo Bakelite's Scope 1 emissions were 43,512,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were 123,648,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were 4,770,127,000 kg CO2e.

Sumitomo Bakelite has set several climate commitments. It aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2050. The company also has near-term targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 48% by fiscal year 2030, compared to a fiscal year 2021 base year. Additionally, it aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, and end-of-life treatment of sold products by 25% within the same timeframe, also from a fiscal year 2021 base year. These targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.
