The company has set ambitious climate commitments. In fiscal year 2023, it raised its near-term target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by fiscal year 2030, compared to a fiscal year 2020 base year. Additionally, Sumitomo Pharma aims to reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 25% within the same timeframe. These 2030 targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with a 1.5°C warming scenario. The company also has a long-term goal to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by fiscal year 2050, primarily through the adoption of renewable energy and energy-saving technologies.

In fiscal year 2022, Sumitomo Pharma successfully reduced its non-consolidated Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 47% compared to fiscal year 2017, ahead of its previous 35% reduction target. This achievement was largely due to the transition to 100% renewable energy for electricity at its Oita Plant from November 2021 and Suzuka Plant from April 2022, with the Tokyo Head Office following suit in April 2024.
