Telkom, a South African post and telecommunication services company, has committed to significant climate action, including achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by FY2040. The company has set Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved targets.

In FY2025, Telkom's reported Scope 1 emissions were about 35,127,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were approximately 541,268,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were around 1,713,406,000 kg CO2e. Looking back, in FY2024, their Scope 1 emissions were about 66,167,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were approximately 572,874,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were around 1,723,801,000 kg CO2e. For FY2023, Telkom reported approximately 85,100,000 kg CO2e for Scope 1 emissions, 619,640,000 kg CO2e for Scope 2 emissions, and 1,951,155,000 kg CO2e for Scope 3 emissions, which included 1,513,273,000 kg CO2e from downstream leased assets and 437,882,000 kg CO2e from upstream transportation and distribution. In FY2022, Scope 1 emissions were roughly 55,466,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were about 797,316,000 kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were approximately 1,763,692,000 kg CO2e, with 1,286,891,000 kg CO2e from downstream leased assets and 476,800,000 kg CO2e from upstream transportation and distribution.

Telkom has established near-term targets to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 54.6% by FY2033, against a FY2022 base year. Additionally, the company aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy-related activities, and use of sold products by 32.5% within the same timeframe. Long-term targets include a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by FY2040 from a FY2022 base year, and a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy-related activities, and use of sold products by FY2040. These targets are consistent with reductions required to keep global warming to 1.5°C.
