Toppan, a commercial printing company headquartered in Japan, has reported its carbon emissions, demonstrating a commitment to climate action. For the fiscal year 2024, the company's total emissions, encompassing Scope 1, 2, and 3, were approximately 7.11 billion kg CO2e. This breaks down into Scope 1 emissions of approximately 318 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of about 790 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions totalling approximately 6.13 billion kg CO2e, with purchased goods and services accounting for about 3.57 billion kg CO2e of this total.

In fiscal year 2023, Toppan reported total emissions of approximately 6.76 billion kg CO2e. Scope 1 emissions were around 257 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions were approximately 788 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions amounted to about 5.71 billion kg CO2e. Within Scope 3, purchased goods and services were a significant contributor at approximately 3.15 billion kg CO2e, followed by the end-of-life treatment of sold products at about 1.39 billion kg CO2e, and downstream transportation and distribution at approximately 242 million kg CO2e.

Toppan has established ambitious climate targets. The company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by fiscal year 2050. As part of its near-term strategy, Toppan commits to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 54.6% by FY2030, using FY2017 as a base year. Furthermore, a reduction of 54.6% in absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions is targeted within the same timeframe. For the longer term, Toppan aims for a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by FY2050, with a similar 90% reduction targeted for its absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions. These targets are aligned with a 1.5°C climate scenario. The company is also actively working towards carbon neutrality, with a target to achieve this by 2050.
