For 2020, the University disclosed Scope 1 emissions of approximately 39,667 metric tonnes CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 16,397 metric tonnes CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of approximately 2,471 metric tonnes CO2e, leading to an estimated total of 58,535 metric tonnes CO2e.

The University of Edinburgh has established several climate commitments:

• It aims to reduce its Scope 1 emissions by 30% from a 2021 baseline by 2030.
• It aims to reduce its Scope 2 emissions by 30% from a 2021 baseline by 2030.
• The University plans to reduce its carbon emissions per £ million turnover by 50% from a 2007/08 baseline year by 2025, and return overall carbon emissions to 2007/08 baseline levels by 2025.
• The University has an ambitious "Zero by 2040" target, contributing to the Scottish Government's aim of achieving at least an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as set in The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.
• Specifically for Scope 3 downstream emissions, the University's Integrated Transport Plan aims to contribute to the "Zero by 2040" Climate Strategy by reducing car use and promoting sustainable travel for students and staff.
