Key strategies to reach this goal include retrofitting and optimising buildings to enhance performance and reduce energy and carbon, improving space utilisation and resource efficiency, decarbonising heat systems to electric or zero-carbon technologies, increasing onsite renewable energy generation, and conducting a feasibility study for a large-scale renewable energy park at the Walton Hall campus. Additionally, the university plans to purchase 100% electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

For Scope 3 emissions, The Open University aims to achieve net zero no later than 2050, demonstrating a long-term commitment to reducing its indirect environmental impact through effective waste avoidance and resource recovery management practices.
