Cemig

Cemig, a Brazilian company in the transmission services of electricity industry, reported total carbon emissions of approximately 6.33 billion kg CO2e in 2024. This figure includes:

• Scope 1 emissions: Approximately 42.86 million kg CO2e, comprising 7.39 million kg CO2e from mobile combustion, 9.31 million kg CO2e from fugitive emissions, and 0.22 million kg CO2e from stationary combustion.
• Scope 2 emissions: Approximately 376.17 million kg CO2e, with around 2.26 million kg CO2e from purchased electricity.
• Scope 3 emissions: Approximately 5.91 billion kg CO2e, which includes 18.97 million kg CO2e from investments, 297.36 million kg CO2e from capital goods, 1.33 million kg CO2e from business travel, 0.12 million kg CO2e from employee commute, 1.82 billion kg CO2e from the use of sold products, 72.76 million kg CO2e from purchased goods and services, 0.18 million kg CO2e from waste generated in operations, and 4.10 billion kg CO2e from fuel and energy related activities.

Looking back, Cemig's total emissions in 2023 were about 5.43 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at 20.63 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 at 305.51 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at 5.11 billion kg CO2e. In 2022, total emissions were around 6.25 billion kg CO2e, comprising 83.45 million kg CO2e for Scope 1, 291.77 million kg CO2e for Scope 2, and 5.88 billion kg CO2e for Scope 3.

Cemig has set ambitious climate commitments and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated targets:

• Net-Zero Target: Cemig aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2040.
• Near-Term Targets (by 2030, from a 2021 base year):
  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 70.8%.
  • Reduce Scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy related activities covering all sold electricity by 75.8% per MWh.
  • Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products for sold and distributed fossil fuels by 42.0%.
  • Reduce all remaining absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42.0%.
• Long-Term Targets (by 2040, from a 2021 base year):
  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90.0%.
  • Reduce Scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy related activities covering all sold electricity by 92.4% per MWh.
  • Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products for sold and distributed fossil fuels by 90.0%.
  • Reduce all remaining absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90.0%.

Additionally, Cemig aims to offset 100% of its Scope 1 emissions by 2026.
