Cognizant, a US-based company in the Computer and related services industry, reported total carbon emissions of approximately 527.7 million kg CO2e in 2025. This includes around 6.4 million kg CO2e from Scope 1 emissions, about 55 million kg CO2e from market-based Scope 2 emissions (or 112.4 million kg CO2e location-based Scope 2 emissions), and approximately 466.3 million kg CO2e from Scope 3 emissions. The Scope 3 emissions largely comprise purchased goods and services (217.1 million kg CO2e), employee commute (86.3 million kg CO2e), and capital goods (56.2 million kg CO2e).

Looking back, Cognizant's total emissions in 2024 were approximately 491.2 million kg CO2e, and in 2023, they were around 533.1 million kg CO2e. In 2019, Cognizant's total emissions were significantly higher, at approximately 1.01 billion kg CO2e, including about 15.8 million kg CO2e for Scope 1, 249.8 million kg CO2e for market-based Scope 2, and 748.7 million kg CO2e for Scope 3 emissions.

Cognizant has set ambitious climate commitments validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2040, from a 2019 base year. Near-term targets include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 77% by 2030, and absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 47% within the same timeframe. For the long term, Cognizant aims to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2040, also from a 2019 base year. These targets are considered consistent with keeping global warming to 1.5°C. Cognizant is also committed to obtaining 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2026. The company is on track to meet these net-zero goals, which also include reducing total emissions by 50% by 2030. Cognizant is also a signatory of The Climate Pledge, which it joined in 2021.
