In 2024, the company's Scope 1 emissions were approximately 23.3 billion kg CO2e, including 46 million kg CO2e from mobile combustion and 23.267 billion kg CO2e from stationary combustion. Scope 2 emissions for the same year were approximately 78 million kg CO2e, all from purchased electricity.

Looking at previous years, in 2023, DTE Energy's Scope 1 emissions were approximately 706 million kg CO2e, with 44 million kg CO2e from mobile combustion and 21.881 billion kg CO2e from stationary combustion. Scope 3 emissions for 2023 were about 115 million kg CO2e from fuel and energy-related activities. For 2021, Scope 1 emissions were around 770 million kg CO2e, including 27.211 billion kg CO2e from stationary combustion, and Scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy-related activities were approximately 188 million kg CO2e.

The company has set several climate commitments:

• Net Zero Target: DTE Energy aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 for all scopes. DTE Electric specifically targets net zero carbon emissions of electricity delivered to its customers by 2050.
• Carbon Reduction Plan: The company is pursuing an agenda to reduce carbon emissions by over 80% by 2050, including the closure of all remaining coal-fired units.
• DTE Electric Reductions:
  • An 85% reduction in carbon emissions from electricity delivered to DTE Electric customers by 2035 (from a 2005 baseline).
  • A 90% reduction in carbon emissions from electricity delivered to DTE Electric customers by 2040 (from a 2005 baseline).
  • An accelerated plan includes a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2028 (from a 2021 baseline), two years earlier than originally planned, partly by ceasing coal use at Belle River Power Plant.
  • Specific near-term Scope 2 targets for DTE Electric include a 32% reduction in carbon emissions of electricity delivered to customers by 2023 (from a 2005 baseline), and a 65% reduction by 2028 (from a 2005 baseline).
• DTE Gas Commitments:
  • Net zero carbon emissions by 2050 from internal gas operations and gas suppliers (Scope 1 and Scope 2, with a Scope 3 upstream target for natural gas procured).
  • An 80% reduction in carbon emissions from DTE Gas operations by 2040 (from a 2010 baseline).
  • A 35% reduction in carbon emissions from the combustion of natural gas by DTE Gas customers (Scope 3 downstream) by 2040 (from a 2005 baseline).

DTE Energy's 2019 accelerated carbon reduction commitment included a 32% reduction below 2005 levels by 2023, 50% below by 2030, and 80% below by 2040. In 2018, the company had achieved a 21% reduction from 2005 levels, representing 66% of the 32% reduction milestone goal for 2023, and 42% of the 50% reduction milestone goal for 2030. No Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) targets are currently in place.
