In that year, the company's Scope 1 emissions, primarily from stationary and mobile combustion, totalled approximately 23.3 billion kg CO2e. Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity were approximately 78 million kg CO2e. In 2023, DTE Energy's Scope 1 emissions were approximately 22.6 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy-related activities were about 115 million kg CO2e. For 2021, Scope 1 emissions were about 27.2 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 3 fuel and energy-related activities contributing roughly 188 million kg CO2e.
DTE Energy has set ambitious climate commitments, targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all scopes by 2050. Specifically, DTE Electric aims for net-zero carbon emissions from electricity delivered to customers by 2050, with interim goals of an 85% reduction by 2035 and a 90% reduction by 2040 from 2005 levels. The company also intends to cease coal use at its Belle River Power Plant and reduce its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2028, two years ahead of its original schedule. DTE Gas aims for net-zero emissions by 2050 from internal operations and gas suppliers, alongside an 80% reduction in carbon emissions from DTE Gas operations by 2040 (from 2010 levels) and a 35% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from the combustion of natural gas by DTE Gas customers by 2040 (from 2005 levels).
