This figure encompasses Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Of this total, Scope 1 emissions accounted for approximately 12.9 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions (market-based and location-based) were approximately 6 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were approximately 70.7 billion kg CO2e. Significant contributions to Scope 3 emissions came from purchased goods and services (about 29.1 billion kg CO2e), end-of-life treatment of sold products (approximately 19.7 billion kg CO2e), and the use of sold products (around 18.6 billion kg CO2e).

In 2024, LyondellBasell's total emissions were approximately 135.7 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 15 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 at roughly 7.1 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at approximately 113.6 billion kg CO2e. The use of sold products was the largest contributor to Scope 3 emissions, at about 53.3 billion kg CO2e.

LyondellBasell has established ambitious climate commitments, including a goal to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% by 2030, relative to a 2020 baseline. Additionally, the company aims for a 30% reduction in absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2030, also against a 2020 baseline. Furthermore, LyondellBasell has set a long-term objective to achieve net zero GHG emissions from its global operations by 2050. The company is actively engaged in initiatives such as the Carbon Reduction Program (CRP) to identify and reduce emissions from its highest energy-intensive manufacturing sites.
