LyondellBasell, headquartered in the Netherlands and operating in Other Basic Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing, has disclosed its carbon emissions and ambitious climate commitments.

In 2025, LyondellBasell's total reported greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 89.6 billion kg CO2e. This included Scope 1 emissions of about 12.9 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 market-based emissions of approximately 6 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of around 75.6 billion kg CO2e. Key categories within Scope 3 included purchased goods and services at approximately 29.1 billion kg CO2e, use of sold products at about 18.6 billion kg CO2e, and end-of-life treatment of sold products at approximately 19.7 billion kg CO2e.

Looking back, in 2024, the company's total emissions were roughly 135.7 billion kg CO2e, comprising approximately 15 billion kg CO2e from Scope 1, around 7.1 billion kg CO2e from Scope 2 (market-based), and approximately 118.5 billion kg CO2e from Scope 3. In 2023, total emissions were about 136.2 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at roughly 15.4 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 (market-based) at approximately 7 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at about 116.5 billion kg CO2e.

LyondellBasell has set significant reduction targets. The company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from its global operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 2050. Intermediate goals include a 42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, against a 2020 baseline. Additionally, LyondellBasell is committed to a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, also against a 2020 baseline, in accordance with guidelines from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is participating in the SBTi Expert Advisory Group to support the development of a chemical sector-specific standard for science-based targets.
