Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), a Dutch railway transportation services provider, reported total carbon emissions of approximately 440,000,000 kg CO2e in 2025. This figure represents their combined Scope 1, Scope 2 (market-based), and Scope 3 emissions.
In 2025, NS's Scope 1 emissions were about 12,000,000 kg CO2e, with fugitive emissions accounting for approximately 4,000,000 kg CO2e. Scope 2 (market-based) emissions for the same year were around 1,000,000 kg CO2e, including purchased heat. Their Scope 3 emissions in 2025 totalled approximately 439,000,000 kg CO2e. Key contributors to Scope 3 included purchased goods and services (approximately 172,000,000 kg CO2e), downstream transportation and distribution (approximately 140,000,000 kg CO2e), and capital goods (approximately 45,000,000 kg CO2e).
Looking back, in 2024, NS's total emissions were approximately 474,000,000 kg CO2e. This included Scope 1 emissions of about 12,000,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 (location-based) emissions of approximately 328,000,000 kg CO2e. Their Scope 3 emissions in 2024 amounted to about 475,000,000 kg CO2e. In 2023, total emissions were around 467,000,000 kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 13,000,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 (location-based) at approximately 349,000,000 kg CO2e. Scope 3 emissions in 2023 were roughly 469,000,000 kg CO2e.
Nederlandse Spoorwegen has set ambitious climate commitments. The company aims for its operations to be entirely fossil-free by 2040. NS has also established long-term science-based targets for at least a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040, and for Scope 3 emissions by 2050, both relative to a 2019 baseline and in line with a 1.5°C scenario. NS's goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, signifying a minimum 90% reduction compared to 2019, with remaining emissions offset.
For short-term targets, NS aims for a 46.2% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 (compared to 2019), aligning with a 1.5°C scenario. Additionally, they target a 27.5% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 (compared to 2019), consistent with a 'well-below 2°C scenario'. A specific short-term goal for Scope 3 upstream emissions is a 28% reduction by 2030 (vs 2019), primarily driven by socially responsible commissioning and procurement. In 2020, NS also committed to achieving a zero-emission car fleet by 2025.
