Nederlandse Spoorwegen's Climate Commitments and Emissions Overview

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), a Netherlands-based railway transportation services provider, is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint. In 2025, NS reported total emissions of approximately 440,000,000 kg CO2e. This includes Scope 1 emissions of about 12,000,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 271,000,000 kg CO2e (location-based), and Scope 3 emissions of around 439,000,000 kg CO2e. This represents a decrease from 2024, when total emissions were approximately 474,000,000 kg CO2e.

Reduction Targets and Initiatives:

NS has established ambitious climate commitments, with a strong focus on decarbonisation:

• Near-term Targets (2030):

  • NS aims for a 46.2% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, compared to a 2019 baseline. This target aligns with a 1.5°C scenario.
  • For Scope 3 emissions, NS targets a 27.5% reduction by 2030, also against a 2019 baseline, in line with a 'well-below 2°C' scenario.
  • To achieve the 28% reduction target in Scope 3 by 2030, a key internal strategy is socially responsible commissioning and procurement.

• Long-term Targets (2040 & 2050):

  • Fossil-Free Operations by 2040: NS aims for its operations, including trains, buildings, and offices, to be entirely fossil-free by 2040, utilising green electricity at all times. This represents a long-term net-zero commitment for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
  • Net-Zero by 2050: NS is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This involves at least a 90% reduction across all scopes compared to 2019 levels, with any remaining emissions being offset.
  • Long-term Science-Based Targets: NS has long-term science-based targets for at least a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 and for Scope 3 emissions by 2050, consistent with a 1.5°C scenario.

• Specific Initiatives:

  • NS committed to achieving a zero-emission car fleet by 2025.
