Scope 3 emissions were largely driven by the use of sold products (around 30.5 billion kg CO2e) and purchased goods and services (approximately 23.7 billion kg CO2e).

In 2024, total calculated emissions were approximately 71.3 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 9.5 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 at approximately 2.6 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at around 58.9 billion kg CO2e. Similar reporting for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions was observed in 2022 (approximately 10.3 billion kg CO2e and 2.5 billion kg CO2e, respectively), 2021 (around 11.1 billion kg CO2e and 2.7 billion kg CO2e), and 2020 (approximately 10.4 billion kg CO2e and 2.7 billion kg CO2e). Emissions for 2019 were reported as approximately 10.4 billion kg CO2e (Scope 1) and about 2.8 billion kg CO2e (Scope 2). For 2018, the combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions were approximately 14.2 billion kg CO2e.

Nutrien has set a climate-related target to achieve at least a 30 percent intensity reduction in GHG emissions (Scope 1 and 2) per tonne of products produced, using 2018 as the baseline year, by 2030. This target covers 100% of Nutrien operations, including ammonia, potash, and phosphate production. In 2018, the baseline intensity was recorded as approximately 0.67 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent per metric tonne of unspecified product produced or manufactured.
