Sortera's Carbon Emissions and Climate Commitments

Sortera, a remediation services company based in SE, has set ambitious climate targets aligned with a 1.5°C pathway. The company is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by 2045.

Emissions Data:

• 2025: Sortera reported a total of approximately 101,039,000 kg CO2e. This includes Scope 1 emissions of about 19,158,000 kg CO2e and Scope 3 emissions totalling approximately 81,219,000 kg CO2e. Scope 2 emissions were about 663,000 kg CO2e (market-based).
• 2024: Total emissions for 2024 were approximately 134,500,000 kg CO2e. Scope 1 emissions accounted for about 20,292,000 kg CO2e, while Scope 3 emissions were approximately 113,497,000 kg CO2e. Scope 2 emissions were about 711,000 kg CO2e (market-based).
• 2023: Sortera reported Scope 1 emissions of approximately 7,266,000 kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions of about 418,000 kg CO2e (market-based). Scope 3 data was not disclosed for this year.
• 2022: Total emissions in 2022 were approximately 148,485,000 kg CO2e. This comprised Scope 1 emissions of about 25,480,000 kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 538,000 kg CO2e (market-based), and Scope 3 emissions totalling about 122,467,000 kg CO2e.
• 2021: Scope 1 emissions were approximately 7,113,000 kg CO2e, with Scope 2 emissions at about 180,000 kg CO2e. Scope 3 data was not disclosed for this year.

Climate Commitments and Reduction Targets:

Sortera has established significant near-term and long-term reduction targets.

• Near-Term Targets (by 2030, from a 2022 base year):

  • A reduction of absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42.0%.
  • A reduction of absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25.0%. This reduction covers categories including purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, business travel, downstream transportation and distribution, end-of-life treatment of sold products, and downstream leased assets.

• Long-Term Targets (by 2045, from a 2022 base year):

  • A reduction of absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90.0%.
  • Achieve net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain.

These targets are aligned with keeping global warming to 1.5°C and are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Sortera's reporting period for these targets begins in 2022, with near-term goals set for 2030 and long-term goals for 2045.
