Terna Spa, an electricity distribution and trade services company based in Italy, has reported its carbon emissions for several years. In 2024, the company's total emissions, encompassing Scope 1, 2, and 3, amounted to approximately 3.12 billion kg CO2e. This figure comprises Scope 1 emissions of about 79.4 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions of approximately 1.27 billion kg CO2e (market-based), and Scope 3 emissions totalling about 1.77 billion kg CO2e. Looking back, Terna's total emissions for 2023 were approximately 3.12 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at about 77.6 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 at roughly 1.53 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at approximately 1.53 billion kg CO2e. In 2022, total emissions were around 1.82 billion kg CO2e (Scope 1 and 2 combined), with Scope 1 at approximately 76.5 million kg CO2e and Scope 2 at about 1.74 billion kg CO2e. Prior to 2022, detailed Scope 3 data was not consistently disclosed. Terna has established several climate commitments. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the European Green Deal. For near-term reductions, Terna has committed to cutting its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2% by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year. Additionally, Terna aims to reduce its absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 11.1% by 2030, based on a 2021 baseline. Further near-term targets include an 18% reduction in direct (Scope 1) emissions by 2025 from a 2020 baseline, and a 9% reduction in indirect (Scope 2) emissions by 2025 from the same baseline. Terna's Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments are aligned with a 1.5°C trajectory.
