In 2017, the company reported Scope 1 emissions of about 34.2 billion kg CO2e and Scope 2 emissions (location-based) of approximately 1.9 billion kg CO2e. Scope 3 emissions for 2017 included business travel (around 3.9 million kg CO2e), use of sold products (approximately 12 billion kg CO2e), fuel and energy-related activities (about 4.3 billion kg CO2e), and upstream transportation and distribution (roughly 741.4 million kg CO2e). DTE Energy has set several climate commitments. The company is targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all scopes by 2050. For DTE Electric, the goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from electricity delivered to customers by 2050, with interim targets including an 85% reduction in Scope 1 carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2035 and a 90% reduction by 2040. There is also a near-term Scope 1 target of a 32% reduction from 2005 levels by 2023, and a 65% reduction by 2028. For DTE Gas operations, the company aims for an 80% reduction in Scope 1 carbon emissions by 2040 (from a 2010 baseline) and net-zero carbon emissions for natural gas procured by DTE Gas (Scope 3 upstream) by 2050. The company also aims for a 35% reduction in Scope 3 downstream carbon emissions from the combustion of natural gas by DTE Gas customers by 2040. Additionally, DTE Energy plans to reduce overall carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and 80% by 2040 from a 2005 baseline, aligning with the closure of all remaining coal-fired units. DTE Energy has an accelerated carbon reduction plan to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2028 from a 2021 baseline.
