In 2025, the company's total reported emissions were approximately 89.6 billion kg CO2e. This included Scope 1 emissions of about 12.9 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions (market-based) of around 6 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of approximately 75.6 billion kg CO2e.

Looking at previous years, LyondellBasell's total reported emissions were approximately 135.7 billion kg CO2e in 2024, about 136.2 billion kg CO2e in 2023, and roughly 128.5 billion kg CO2e in 2022. For 2021, only Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions were disclosed, totalling around 16.3 billion kg CO2e (Scope 1) and 7.6 billion kg CO2e (market-based Scope 2). In 2020, total reported emissions were about 123.9 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 at approximately 15.6 billion kg CO2e, Scope 2 (market-based) at around 7.6 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at roughly 105.6 billion kg CO2e.

LyondellBasell has set significant climate commitments. The company aims to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its global operations by 2050. For near-term targets, LyondellBasell has committed to an absolute reduction of 42% in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, relative to a 2020 baseline. Additionally, the company is targeting a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030, also against a 2020 baseline, in line with guidelines from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The company is a member of the SBTi Expert Advisory Group, supporting the development of a chemical sector-specific standard for science-based climate targets. LyondellBasell also anticipates that exiting its refining operations could reduce its current Scope 3 emissions by 37% by 2025 (relative to 2023 levels).
