LyondellBasell, a global chemicals company headquartered in the Netherlands, reported approximately 89.6 billion kg CO2e in total greenhouse gas emissions for 2025. This figure includes Scope 1 emissions totalling about 12.9 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 2 emissions at approximately 6 billion kg CO2e. Scope 3 emissions were estimated at about 70.7 billion kg CO2e, with purchased goods and services accounting for the largest portion at around 29.1 billion kg CO2e. The company has established a net-zero ambition for its global operations by 2050. More immediately, LyondellBasell has set a near-term target to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% by 2030, relative to 2020 levels. Additionally, there is a target to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% by 2030, also against a 2020 baseline, in line with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) guidelines. Previous targets included a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. In earlier reporting years, total emissions were reported as approximately 135.7 billion kg CO2e in 2024 and 136.2 billion kg CO2e in 2023. Scope 1 emissions for 2024 were around 15 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 2 emissions were approximately 7.1 billion kg CO2e. Scope 3 emissions in 2024 were substantial at about 113.6 billion kg CO2e. LyondellBasell's climate commitments include investing in technologies such as hydrogen, process electrification, and carbon capture and storage/utilisation (CCS/CCU). The company aims to replace fossil fuels with low-carbon hydrogen and renewable electricity, and to capture and utilise CO2 emissions from its operations. They have also secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) expected to enable them to procure at least 50% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
