This included Scope 1 emissions of about 1.36 million kg CO2e, market-based Scope 2 emissions of approximately 8.36 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of about 935.33 million kg CO2e. Key contributors to Scope 3 emissions were use of sold products (approximately 440.77 million kg CO2e) and purchased goods and services (about 362.51 million kg CO2e).

In 2023, the company's Scope 1 emissions were approximately 1.21 million kg CO2e, market-based Scope 2 emissions were about 8.69 million kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions were approximately 1.01 billion kg CO2e.

Shi has set near-term Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, using 2023 as a base year. Additionally, the company aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from waste generated in operations and business travel by 50% within the same timeframe. Shi also commits that 70% of its suppliers by spend (covering purchased goods and services) and 13% of its customers by revenue (covering use of sold products) will have science-based targets by 2029. The company's targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions are consistent with keeping global warming to 1.5°C.

Previously, Shi had an intensity target to reduce Scope 1 GHG emissions by 20% by 2025, which it exceeded due to a 40% reduction in 2020, partly attributed to remote working practices during the global pandemic.
