Key contributors to Scope 3 emissions include purchased goods and services at 468,570,000 kg CO2e, and upstream transportation and distribution at 40,549,000 kg CO2e.

Thorlabs has committed to ambitious climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

Near-term SBTi targets, using a 2023 base year, include:

• A 58.8% absolute reduction in Scope 1 GHG emissions by 2034.
• An increase in active annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 5.6% in 2023 to 100% by 2030, addressing Scope 2 emissions.
• A 35.0% absolute reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2034, covering categories such as purchased goods and services, capital goods, and upstream transportation and distribution.

Long-term SBTi net-zero targets for 2050, also from a 2023 base year, involve:

• A 90.0% absolute reduction in Scope 1 GHG emissions.
• A 90.0% absolute reduction in Scope 2 GHG emissions.
• A 90.0% absolute reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions.
