This figure comprises approximately 847 million kg CO2e from Scope 1 emissions, around 884 million kg CO2e from Scope 2 (market-based), and approximately 10.29 billion kg CO2e from Scope 3. Key contributors to Scope 3 emissions include purchased goods and services (approximately 4.40 billion kg CO2e) and the end-of-life treatment of sold products (approximately 4.66 billion kg CO2e).

For 2024, Lanxess reported a total emission of approximately 12.26 billion kg CO2e, with Scope 1 emissions at about 854 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 (market-based) at approximately 1.03 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 at approximately 10.37 billion kg CO2e. Purchased goods and services accounted for roughly 4.21 billion kg CO2e, and end-of-life treatment of sold products contributed approximately 4.88 billion kg CO2e.

Lanxess has established ambitious climate targets, aiming for climate neutrality across its value chain by 2050. Specifically, the company has set a near-term goal to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% by 2030, using 2021 as a baseline year. This translates to an absolute target of approximately 1.3 million tonnes of CO2e for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. Furthermore, Lanxess aims for net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050. This includes a near-term target to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030, from approximately 14.75 million tonnes of CO2e in 2021 to around 11.0 million tonnes of CO2e.

The company's long-term vision includes becoming climate neutral for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 and achieving net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050. These targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming their alignment with the Paris Agreement and efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
