Lanxess, a German-headquartered company in the Chemicals nec industry, reported total carbon emissions of approximately 12.26 billion kg CO2e in 2024. This includes Scope 1 emissions of approximately 854 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions (market-based) of approximately 1.03 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of approximately 10.37 billion kg CO2e.

Looking back, Lanxess's total emissions in 2021 were approximately 16.95 billion kg CO2e, comprising Scope 1 emissions of approximately 939 million kg CO2e, Scope 2 emissions (market-based) of approximately 1.26 billion kg CO2e, and Scope 3 emissions of approximately 14.75 billion kg CO2e.

Lanxess has committed to several climate targets. The company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. This overarching target is supported by both near-term and long-term objectives, which have been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

For near-term reductions, Lanxess plans to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030, using 2021 as the base year. This translates to a reduction to 1.3 million metric tons of CO2e. Additionally, Lanxess commits to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% by 2030, also from a 2021 base year, aiming for 11.0 million metric tons of CO2e.

For long-term reductions, the company aims for a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2040, compared to the 2021 base year. For Scope 3, Lanxess targets a 90% reduction in absolute GHG emissions by 2050, also from a 2021 base year. The remaining 10% of Scope 3 emissions will be addressed through offsetting and investments in permanent carbon removal.

Earlier targets included a 60% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions by the end of 2025, against a 2004 baseline of 6.5 million metric tons, and a 75% reduction by the end of 2030, also against the 2004 baseline. The company also aims for climate neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040.
