Emission factor method on every organisation
DitchCarbon records which of four emission factor methods produced each organisation's figure, organisation, industry, product or activity, and shows it on the organisation's row.
Each row carries its own method marker: organisation data where the organisation published its own emissions, product data from a published product carbon footprint(primary data) , activity data (primary data) from what was actually consumed, or industry data where nothing better exists. Filter the table on the method to isolate the rows resting on a sector average, the secondary data method under the GHG Protocol.
A portfolio total made of four different methods is normal. What matters is being able to see which row used which, because that is the question an auditor asks after the total.
The four methods sit in rough order of how close each is to the real thing. Activity and product data are closest, organisation data next, and an industry factor set is the fallback where an organisation has published nothing.
The rows on industry factors are also the engagement list. Those are the organisations where a single disclosure moves the total, so the method column doubles as a way to choose who to ask first.
